Vikram Misri is a significant Indian diplomat, currently serving as the 35th Foreign Secretary of India since July 2024. With a career spanning over three decades, he has held significant roles, including Ambassador to China, Spain and Myanmar. Misri has contributed immensely to strengthening India’s foreign relations and security policies, and his leadership continues to shape India’s global presence.
Vikram Misri was born on 7 November 1964 in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir and belongs to the Kashmiri Pandit community. He attended several schools in different places, including Burn Hall School in Srinagar and Scindia School in Gwalior. Misri completed his undergraduate degree in history at Hindu College, Delhi and later earned an MBA from the prestigious XLRI – Xavier Labour Relations Institute in Jamshedpur.
After completing his education, Misri initially worked in the advertising industry for three years. However, his passion for diplomacy led him to join the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in 1989. He served in Indian missions in Brussels and Tunis between 1991 and 1996. Misri’s career took a significant turn when he was appointed as the Private Secretary to Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral in 1997. He continued in this role for Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi.

On 28 June 2024, Vikram Misri succeeded Vinay Mohan Kwatra as India’s Foreign Secretary. On 15th July 2024, he officially took over the role, becoming the 35th Foreign Secretary of India.
Vikram Misri is married to Dolly and has two children. He speaks several languages, including English, Hindi, Kashmiri and has a working knowledge of French. Misri is also a fellow of the Kamalnayan Bajaj Fellowship, a leadership initiative by the ASPEN Institute USA.
