Raksha Bandhan is known as Gamha Purnima or Gamha Purnima Rakhi in Odisha.
The festival takes place on the Shravana Purnima, which is the full moon day of the month of Shravana.
Gamha Purnima has a strong association with Lord Balabhadra, who is Lord Jagannath’s elder brother. Apart from this, it also holds importance for farmers because of which it becomes a religious and agricultural festival.
Farmers pray to their cows and oxen for their service rendered during agriculture work. This occasion is also marked by making some special sweets.
This festival falls in the time of monsoons when they start entering into the later stages.
Similar to Raksha Bandhan celebrated elsewhere in India, the ritual includes a sister tying rakhi on her brother’s hand and praying for his health, happiness and longevity.
The brother usually gifts something to his sister along with promising her protection. Sometimes, families celebrate by giving each other sweets and spending some good time together.
In today’s context, Raksha Bandhan is also viewed as a celebration of love, faith and responsibility.
