This festival marks the beginning of a new agricultural season and also reflects a deep bond between humans and nature. Sarhul literally means ‘worship of the Sal tree’ which holds great spiritual significance among tribal communities.
The tree is believed to be the home of Sarna Maa who is the village deity who protects people and ensures prosperity.

These rituals are performed to seek blessings for a good harvest and prosperity.

Day 1: Cleaning homes and sacred places, collection of Sal flowers, priest observes fast
Day 2: Main pooja (rituals), sacrifices, prayers and cultural performances
Day 3: Community feast, traditional food, Handia (rice beer) and celebrations
The festival mainly celebrated in Jharkhand but its influence also extends to nearby states where tribal communities reside.
