What is the Difference Between Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha?

India is a democratic country where people choose their representative to make laws. These laws are made at two main levels – national (for the whole country) and state (for individual states). Two important bodies that make these laws are the Lok Sabha and the Vidhan Sabha. Although both are elected by the people, they work at different levels and handle different responsibilities.

What is Lok Sabha?

The Lok Sabha is the lower house of the Parliament of India. It represents the entire country. People from all over India vote in general elections to choose its members, who are called Members of Parliament (MPs).

The maximum number of members can go up to 550, but currently there are 543 elected members. Each member represents a specific area called a parliamentary constituency. The Lok Sabha has a team of five years, but is can be dissolved earlier.

Its main job is to make laws for the whole country. It also handles important financial matters like the national budget. Only the Lok Sabha can introduce a Money Bill, which deals with taxes and government spending.

What is Vidhan Sabha?

The Vidhan Sabha is the legislative assembly of a state. Every state in India has its own Vidhan Sabha. The members are called Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), and the are elected by the people of that state.

The number of members depends on the population of the state. It can have a maximum of 500 members and usually not less than 60 (with some exceptions for smaller states). Like the Lok Sabha, its term is also five years.

The Vidhan Sabha makes laws related to the state. These includes areas like police, health, agriculture, and local development.
