What is the State Fruit of Tamil Nadu?
If you have ever travelled through the villages and hill regions of Tamil Nadu during summer, you may have noticed a huge green fruit hanging directly from tree trunks. That giant tropical fruit is the Jackfruit, proudly recognized as the state fruit of Tamil Nadu. Known locally as Palapazham, jackfruit is not just a fruit in Tamil Nadu, it is part of the state’s food culture, farming tradition, and everyday life.
Jackfruit is scientifically known as Artocarpus heterophyllus and is famous for its sweet taste, strong aroma, and impressive size. In fact, it is considered the largest tree-borne fruit in the world. Some jackfruits grow so large that a single fruit can weigh more than 30 kilograms.
Tamil Nadu selected jackfruit as its state fruit because of its agricultural importance and cultural connection with the people of the state. The fruit grows widely in tropical regions of Tamil Nadu, especially in districts with warm weather and fertile soil.
Unlike many fruits that are eaten only when ripe, jackfruit is useful at every stage. Raw jackfruit is cooked as a vegetable in spicy South Indian dishes, while the ripe fruit is enjoyed fresh because of its naturally sweet flavor. Even the seeds are boiled, roasted, or added to curries.
In many Tamil households, jackfruit recipes have been passed down for generations. During summer, local markets are filled with the fruit, and its sweet aroma instantly attracts buyers.
Jackfruit is easy to recognize because of its rough green outer skin and massive size. Inside, it contains soft yellow bulbs that are juicy and flavorful. The texture is slightly chewy, and many people compare its sweetness to a mix of mango and banana.
One interesting fact about jackfruit is that it grows directly from the trunk and thick branches of the tree. This unusual growing pattern makes the fruit stand out among tropical fruits.
Jackfruit is not only tasty but also packed with nutrients. It contains:
Because of these nutrients, jackfruit is considered good for digestion, immunity, and energy. In recent years, raw jackfruit has also become popular among health-conscious people because of its plant-based texture and nutritional value.
Tamil Nadu cuisine uses jackfruit in many creative ways. Ripe jackfruit is eaten fresh or used in sweets and desserts. Raw jackfruit is cooked into curries, chips, and traditional recipes.
In some areas, villagers dry jackfruit pieces to preserve them for later use. The seeds are often roasted as snacks or added to homemade dishes. Even the wood of the jackfruit tree is valuable and used for making furniture and musical instruments.
