Where is the Headquarter of International Hockey Federation Located?

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) is the main organization that manages and promotes field hockey and indoor hockey around the world. The headquarters of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) is in Lausanne, Switzerland. Before 2005, the office was in Brussels, Belgium, but it was later shifted to Lausanne. This city is called the Olympic Capital because many important sports bodies are located there. From its Lausanne office, FIH looks after the rules, events, and development of field hockey all around the world.

History of the International Hockey Federation

FIH was founded on 7 January 1924 in Paris, France by Paul Leautey, who became its first president. The organization was formed because field hockey was not included in the 1924 Summer Olympics. The first countries to join as members were Austria, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Hungary, Spain and Switzerland.

In 1982, FIH merged with the International Federation of Women’s Hockey Associations (IFWHA). IFWHA was founded in1927 by Australia, Denmark, England, Ireland, Scotland, South Africa, the United States and Wales to promote women’s hockey.

Since 2005, FIH has been headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland after shifting from Brussels, Belgium.

Objectives of the International Hockey Federation

FIH has several main objectives to promote and develop field hockey:

  • Develop and promotes field hockey globally.
  • Set and maintain rules for playing, equipment and officiating.
  • Organize major tournaments like the Olympics and the Hockey World Cup.
  • Provide education and training for players, coaches and officials.
  • Encourage grassroots development with youth programs and regional competitions.
  • Support national hockey federations to increase participation.
  • Promote international cooperation through the sport.

Internal Structure of FIH

FIH is divided into five continental federations, which manage hockey in different regions:

  • AfHF – African Hockey Federation
  • AHF – Asian Hockey Federation
  • EHF – European Hockey Federation
  • OHF – Oceania Hockey Federation
  • PAHF – Pan American Hockey Federation

FIH has also committees that oversee different aspects of the sport, such as rules, technical development and medical safety. It works closely with international sports organization like the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

Functions of the International Hockey Federation

FIH performs several important functions to manage and grow the sport:

  • Setting and enforcing rules: FIH creates and updates the rules of hockey, including field size, game duration and player regulations.
  • Organizing major competitions: FIH is responsible for international tournaments like the Olympics and the Hockey World Cup.
  • Developing and promoting hockey: FIH runs coaching programs, umpire training and grassroots initiatives to expand the sport.
  • Supporting National Federations: FIH provides resources, technical assistance and development programs to member countries.
  • Collaborating with other Sports Organizations: FIH works with the IOC and IPC to promote hockey on a global level.
