Where is the Pahalgam Hill Station Located?

Location of Pahalgam Hill Station

Pahalgam is in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. It is about 45 kilometers from Anantnag city and is situated on the banks of the Lidder River. The town lies at an altitude of 2,200 meters (7,200 feet) above sea level. It is part of the Lidder Valley, which is surrounded by tall mountains and green forests.

Meaning of the Pahalgam

The name Pahalgam comes from the Kashmiri words ”Puheyl” (meaning shepherd) and ”Goam” (meaning village). So, it means ”village of Shepherds.” In Hindu stories, the place is also called Bailgaon, meaning ”Village of the Bull,” because Lord Shiva is said to have left his bull here on the way to the Amarnath Cave.

Climate of the Pahalgam

Pahalgam has a temperate climate. Summers are cool and pleasant, while winters are cold and snowy. It can snow up to 4 meters (13 feet) in winter. The area gets most of its rain and snow between November and May.

How to reach Pahalgam?

Pahalgam is well-connected by roads. The NH 501 highway links it to Anantnag. You can reach Pahalgam by bus or taxi from Srinagar or Jammu. The nearest airport is Srinagar (95 km away). The nearest major railway stations are in Jammu and Udhampur.

Pahalgam is popular for its beautiful sights like:

  • Betaab village: a scenic green valley.
  • Baisaran: called ”Mini Switzerland” for its beauty.
  • Kolahoi Glacier: a glacier you can hike to.
  • Amarnath Yatra Base Camp: the starting point for the sacred journey to Amarnath Cave.
  • Pahalgam Golf Course: a famous 18-hole golf course.

2025 Pahalgam Attack

On 22 April 2025, a tragic incident happened when militants attacked tourists in Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam. About 28 people were killed, and over 20 others were injured. The attack was carried out by a group called The Resistance Front, which is known for violence in the region. This incident shocked the whole country and led to stronger measures in the area.
