Pahalgam is in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. It is about 45 kilometers from Anantnag city and is situated on the banks of the Lidder River. The name Pahalgam comes from the Kashmiri words ”Puheyl” (meaning shepherd) and ”Goam” (meaning village). So, it means ”village of Shepherds.” In Hindu stories, the place is also called Bailgaon, meaning ”Village of the Bull,” because Lord Shiva is said to have left his bull here on the way to the Amarnath Cave.
Pahalgam has a temperate climate. Summers are cool and pleasant, while winters are cold and snowy. It can snow up to 4 meters (13 feet) in winter. The area gets most of its rain and snow between November and May.
