Although Lisbon actually has more than seven hills, the title stayed and became a symbol of its charm, scenic views, rich history, and unique landscape.

Why is Lisbon Known as the City of Seven Hills?

Lisbon got the name City of Seven Hills from a 17th-century book written by Friar Nicolau de Oliveira. The book was called “Livro das Grandezas de Lisboa” (The Book of Lisbon Grandeurs). In this book, Lisbon was compared to Rome in Italy, which is also said to be built on seven hills.

Even though people say Lisbon has seven hills, the city actually has more than that. But the number seven was kept because of its special meaning and the connection with Rome. This idea became popular and is still used today.
