In 1961, Congress officially recognized the origin of the Uncle Sam symbol. It linked the name to a historical figure, Samuel Wilson, who supplied meat to soldiers during the War of 1812. Samuel’s initials, “U.S.,” were stamped on the barrels of meat, which soldiers began calling “Uncle Sam.”
