Which District is known as the City of Cantonment of Uttar Pradesh?

Uttar Pradesh is the largest state in India and is home to many districts, each with its own unique identity. Some cities are famous for their culture, while others are known for their industries or history. Among them, one district is popularly called the “City of Cantonment” because of its strong military presence and historical role.

City of Cantonment in Uttar Pradesh

The district of Meerut, in western Uttar Pradesh, is known as the City of Cantonment. The Meerut Cantonment is one of the largest and most historic military cantonments in India. It was first established by the British after the Battle of Laswari in 1803.

Why is Meerut Known as the City of Cantonment?

Meerut holds this title for many reasons:

  • Large Cantonment Area: It has one of the biggest military cantonments in India.
  • Historic Legacy: It has been a key military center since British rule.
  • 1857 Revolt: The First War of Independence started here, when Indian soldiers rebelled against the use of greased cartridges.

From here, the revolt quickly spread to Delhi and then across India, making Meerut an unforgettable name in history.

Meerut Beyond the Cantonment

Meerut is not only known for its military base but also for other special features:

  • Sports Goods Industry: Meerut is famous worldwide for making cricket bats, balls, and other sports equipment.
  • Education: The city has many universities and colleges, making it an education hub.
  • Industry: It is also known for handloom, scissors, and musical instrument industries.

Because of its sporting industry, Meerut is also called the “Sports City of India.”
