Bardoli, a town in the Surat district of Gujarat, is popularly called the “Butter City” because of its well-known production of rich and creamy butter, available in both salted and unsalted types. Apart from this, Bardoli holds great historical importance for the Bardoli Satyagraha of 1928, a farmers’ movement led by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel against unfair British taxes. This event made Bardoli an important symbol of India’s freedom struggle.

Historical Significance of Bardoli

Bardoli is also famous for the Bardoli Satyagraha, a major movement in India’s freedom struggle. In 1928, farmers in Bardoli protested against the British government’s unfair tax policies that heavily affected them. Led by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the protest used non-violent methods to demand justice. The movement was successful, and the British government was forced to return confiscated land, canceling a tax hike that had been imposed on farmers.
