In India, many cities are known by special names because of their history, culture or traditions. Some places are famous for their temples, festivals or unique charms. In Uttar Pradesh, there is one city that is called the “City of Widows.” This name is linked to the lives of many women who live there. But why is this city known by this name? Let’s find out.

City of Widows in Uttar Pradesh

Vrindavan, a city in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, is often called the “City of Widows.” Thousands of widows live here after facing social or financial hardships, with many finding refuge in ashrams. Besides this, Vrindavan is also a holy city for Lord Krishna’s devotees, attracting pilgrims from all over the world.

Why Do Widows Go to Vrindavan?

  • Economic and Family Problems: Many widows come to Vrindavan because they have no financial support. They may have lost their husbands and do not have anyone to take care of them.
  • Abandoned by Families: Some widows are left alone by their relative. In many cases, their own families refuse to accept them after their husband’s death.
  • Religious Beliefs: In some conservative Hindu traditions, widows are not allowed to live a normal live after their husband’s death. Due to these beliefs, they are sent away from their homes.

What Happens to Widows in Vrindavan?

  • Living in Ashrams: Widows in Vrindavan live in special shelters called vidhwa ashrams. These ashrams are run by the government, private organizations and NGOs.
  • Singing in Temples: Many widows earn a small amount of money by singing hymns in temples. These temples, known as bhajan ashrams, provide them with food in return for their singing.
  • Begging on Streets: Some widows, who do not have any support, beg on the streets. They often wear white stairs and have shaved heads, which is a traditional way for widows to dress in some parts of India.

What is Vrindavan Famous For?

  • A Holy City: Vrindavan is one of the holiest cities in Hinduism. It is believed to be the place where Lord Krishna spent his childhood.
  • Krishna Devotion: The city is filled with temples dedicated to Lord Krishna. Devotees from all over the world come here to worship and celebrate festivals like Janmashtami and Holi.
  • Location: Vrindavan is located in the Mathura district, on the west bank of the Yamuna River. It is about 11 kilometers from Mathura, another important religious city.
