Which Indian District is known as the Garlic City of India?

Garlic is a widely used crop in India, valued for its strong flavor in food and its health benefits. Different states cultivate garlic, but one particular district has gained a unique identity because of its massive garlic production and bustling markets. This district is often called the “Garlic City”, a title that highlights its special place in India’s agricultural map.

Garlic City of India

The district of Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh is known as the Garlic City of India. It is one of the largest garlic-producing regions in the country and is home to Asia’s biggest garlic market (Krishi Upaj Mandi). Farmers here produce garlic in huge quantities, which is supplied across India and even exported abroad, making Mandsaur famous for its garlic cultivation and trade.

Why is Mandsaur Called  the Garlic City?

  • Top Producer: Madhya Pradesh is the leading garlic-producing state in India, and Mandsaur contributes the most.
  • Asia’s Largest Garlic Market: The Krishi Upaj Mandi in Mandsaur is considered the biggest garlic market in Asia.
  • Trade Hub: Traders from across India come here to buy garlic in bulk, making it a major center for garlic business.

Garlic Production in Other States

Apart from Madhya Pradesh, garlic is also grown in:

  • Rajasthan
  • Gujarat
  • Uttar Pradesh
  • Maharashtra

Still, Madhya Pradesh remains at the top in terms of total production.

India’s Place in World Garlic Production

Globally, China is the largest garlic producer, contributing about 70–80% of the world’s supply. India stands at the second position, and districts like Mandsaur play a big role in this achievement.
