Did you know that India has one of the largest railway networks in the world, connecting thousands of cities and villages every day? Trains are not just a means of transport, but also an important part of people’s daily lives. From long-distance journeys to local travel, railways play a big role in keeping the country moving.
The Indian Railways is known for its vast reach and efficiency. It connects remote areas to major cities and helps in the easy movement of people and goods. Over the years, the railway network has expanded rapidly across most parts of the country.
However, despite this wide network, there are still a few regions where railway connectivity has not reached yet. These areas are often located in difficult terrains such as mountains, forests, or regions with challenging weather conditions, making construction and maintenance of railway lines more complex.
In such places, people depend more on road transport and air travel for their daily needs. The government has been working continuously to improve connectivity in these regions, aiming to bring better transportation facilities and development opportunities in the future.
The only Indian state that currently does not have a fully operational railway network is Sikkim.
Although Indian Railways has expanded its network across almost the entire country, this small Himalayan state is still not directly connected by trains.
The Indian government is actively working to connect Sikkim through the Sevoke–Rangpo Railway Project.
Once completed, this project will finally bring railway connectivity to Sikkim.
At present, the closest major railway station to Sikkim is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), located in West Bengal.
It is about 120 km away from Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim. Travelers usually take taxis or buses from this station to reach the state.
