Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh is well-known for its connection with Asiatic lions. This park has been chosen as a special place for these rare animals. Let’s learn about Kuno National Park, its history, and why it is an important place for Asiatic lions.
Kuno was first set up as Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary in 1981. In the 1990s, it was chosen for the Asiatic Lion Reintroduction Project. This plan aimed to move some lions from Gujarat’s Gir Forest to Kuno to create a second home for them. In 2013, the Indian Supreme Court ordered Gujarat to send some of its lions to Kuno to make sure there was another place where they could live safely.
Kuno National Park is located in the Vindhyan Hills of Madhya Pradesh. This area is rich in nature and provides a safe home for many plants and animals. The park’s location is perfect for lions, as it offers enough space and resources for them to thrive.
Currently, Kuno can support up to 40 lions. However, for the population to remain strong and safe over many years, experts believe the park needs a minimum of around 80 lions. This would help ensure the lions have enough space and resources to live and grow.
