Glass is something we use every day in our lives. It is found in windows, bottles, mirrors and even mobile screens. Glass is made by heating materials like sand, soda ash and limestone at very high temperatures until they melt. In India, there is a special day famous for making glass items, especially colourful bangles. This city has a long distance and is known all over the country for its glass industry.
The city is known as the Glass City of India is Firozabad. It is located near Agra in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Firozabad is also called the Bangle City of India because it produces most of the glass bangles used across the country. The city is full of small workshops and big factories where glass items are made every day.
Glass making in Firozabad started many years ago during the Mughal period. At that time, people began melting broken glass pieces and turning them into new items like bangles and decorations.
With time, this small work grew into a big industry. Today, many families in the city are still involved in this work and the skills are passed from one generation to another.
Firozabad is famous because it produces glass on a very large scale. There are hundreds of glass factories in the city.
A large part of India’s glass bangles, around 70% to 80%, is made here. Along with bangles, the city also makes decorative lights, glass utensils and laboratory glass items. Many of these products are even exported to other countries.
The process of making glass bangles is very interesting. First, raw materials are melted in a furnace at very high temperatures. The melted glass becomes soft and can be shaped easily.
Workers then use tools or even mouth-blowing techniques to give the glass its shape. After shaping, the bangles are cooled slowly in a special process called annealing. This helps prevent them from breaking.
