Spices have been an important part of human life since ancient times. They were used not only to add taste and aroma to food, but also for medicine, religious rituals, and preserving food. Cinnamon is widely regarded as the oldest spice in the world. Its use can be traced back to around 2000 BCE, especially in ancient Egypt and China. In those times, cinnamon was not just a kitchen ingredient but a symbol of wealth and power. Because it was rare and hard to obtain, it was often more valuable than gold.
True cinnamon comes from the inner bark of trees belonging to the Cinnamomum family. These trees mainly grow in Sri Lanka, which is considered the original home of cinnamon. The bark is carefully peeled and dried, where it naturally curls into thin sticks known as quills. In India, cinnamon is commonly called Dalchini.
In the ancient world, people did not know where cinnamon came from. Traders kept its source a secret to control its high price. Some even spread myths about dangerous lands and giant birds guarding cinnamon trees. Because of its rarity, cinnamon was used in royal rituals, religious ceremonies, and even in embalming the dead.
Cinnamon was widely used in ancient Egypt to preserve bodies during mummification. In traditional medicine, it was valued for warming the body, improving digestion, and fighting infections. It was also added to food to slow spoilage, long before modern preservation methods existed.
Even today, cinnamon is known for its health benefits. It is rich in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. Many studies show that cinnamon can help control blood sugar levels by improving how the body uses insulin. Because of this, it is often recommended in small amounts for people managing diabetes.
While cinnamon is considered the oldest, many other spices are also very ancient. Coriander and cumin were used around 5000 BCE. Garlic was popular in ancient Egypt for strength and health. Turmeric was used in India for cooking and medicine thousands of years ago. Black pepper, known as “Black Gold,” later became one of the most valuable spices in world trade.
Black pepper is known as the “King of Spices.” It earned this title because of its huge importance in global trade and daily cooking. Native to India’s Malabar Coast, black pepper was once used as money and remains one of the most traded spices in the world today.
