Which State is the Largest Producer of Cloves in India?

Did you know one tiny spice in your kitchen travels a very long journey before reaching your plate? Cloves are among the most aromatic spices used in Indian cooking, sweets, and even traditional medicines.

This fragrant spice grows only in very special weather conditions. It needs warm temperatures, good rainfall, and rich soil, which makes only a few regions in India suitable for its cultivation.

Farmers carefully grow clove trees for many years before they start producing buds. The buds are picked by hand and then dried naturally, turning into the dark brown cloves we commonly see.

Because of these strict growing conditions, one particular Indian state stands far ahead in clove production and plays a major role in supplying this spice across the country.

In the next section, let’s discover which Indian state holds this unique distinction.

Largest Cloves Producing State in India

Tamil Nadu is the largest producer of cloves in India. As per horticulture data for 2021–22, the state produced around 0.99 thousand tonnes of cloves, making it the top contributor in the country.

The crop is mostly grown on small plantations. Farmers often grow cloves along with pepper, nutmeg, coconut, or other plantation crops. This mixed farming helps farmers earn steady income and improves soil fertility.

Cloves from Tamil Nadu are sold in local markets and are also supplied to spice traders across India.

Major Clove Growing Areas in Tamil Nadu

Clove cultivation in the state is mainly concentrated in the southern Western Ghats region, where the climate is humid and cool.

Kanyakumari District – The Clove Hub

Kanyakumari district alone produces about 65% of India’s cloves. The district’s rainfall, shade trees, and fertile soil make it ideal for spice farming.

Other Important Regions

Besides Kanyakumari, cloves are also grown in:

  • Maramalai
  • Karumparai
  • Vellimalai

These hill slopes provide shade and moisture, which are necessary for clove trees to grow properly.

Harvesting Season of Cloves

Clove trees take several years to mature. Once the trees start producing buds, harvesting usually happens between December and February.

Farmers pluck the flower buds before they bloom. After harvesting, the buds are dried in sunlight until they turn dark brown. These dried buds are the cloves we use in cooking.

Importance of Clove Farming in the Local Economy

Clove cultivation provides income to many small farmers in hill regions. Since the crop grows under shade, farmers can grow other spices together and reduce financial risk.

The spice also supports:

  • Local traders
  • Drying and processing units
  • Export businesses

Thus, cloves play a significant role in rural livelihoods.

Largest Clove Producer in the World

Globally, Indonesia is the largest producer of cloves. The country’s tropical climate and huge domestic demand — especially for clove cigarettes — keep production very high.

Historically, Zanzibar was famous as the “Island of Cloves,” but today Indonesia leads world production.
