The coconut industry in India is fast becoming a crucial component of the agriculture sector in India, livelihood of many Indians, and exports from India. Referred to as the “Kalpavriksha” or Tree of Life, the coconut tree offers a variety of benefits, providing everything from food and beverages to fiber, timber, energy, and raw material for a whole gamut of industries.

Currently, India is the top producer of coconuts in the world. It tops the charts in both world production and the world’s coconut cultivation area, which comes third in the latter.
Around 31.24% of the world’s coconut production and 17.90% of its coconut cultivation area belong to India.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, India produced approximately 20,301.22 million coconut nuts in 2024-25 from approximately 2.19 million hectares. The average productivity of coconuts in India was approximately 9,249 nuts per hectare.
Coconut farming is very important since it is mostly done by small and marginal farmers.

Keralam is the state having maximum area under coconut cultivation in India.
This state has almost 7.54 lakh hectares under coconut cultivation, making it the largest coconut growing region in India. Coconut cultivation has always been an important component of agriculture and culture in Keralam.
Maximum area under coconut cultivation indicates that this crop is suited to the agro-climatic conditions prevailing in this state.
Tamil Nadu Is The State Having Maximum Production Of Coconuts
Despite being a leader in coconut cultivation area, Tamil Nadu leads in coconut production in India.
Tamil Nadu is among the main coconut producing states in India and produces about 5,149.87 million nuts, as per the cited figures of top coconut producing regions in India.
This shows that the area under cultivation alone cannot determine the production of any crop. Other factors like productivity, cultivation methods, irrigation etc. also play an important role in determining the overall production.
Andhra Pradesh – Leader in Coconut Productivity
Andhra Pradesh stands at the top of the list for being the highest producer of coconut per unit of cultivated land.
Productivity refers to the total output of coconuts that can be achieved through cultivation per unit of cultivated land.
After Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu are other two important states in terms of coconut productivity.
