Who is known as the Aadhaar Man of India?

Aadhaar Card is one of the most important identity documents in India today. It is a 12-digit number given to every citizen and is used for many government and private services. But have you ever wondered who started this idea? The concept of Aadhaar was introduced by Nandan Nilekani, a well-known technology expert. Let us understand his story and how Aadhaar came into existence?

Who is Nandan Nilekani?

Nandan Nilekani is one of India’s most respected software engineers and businessmen. He was born on 2 June 1955 in Bengaluru. He studied Electrical Engineering at IIT Bombay.

In 1981, he co-founded Infosys along with N.R. Narayana Murthy and others. He later became the CEO of the company and played a big role in making it successful worldwide.

How did Aadhaar Start?

In 2009, the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh gave Nilekani the responsibility to lead a new identity project for India. This project was handled by UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India).

Nilekani left his job at Infosys to take up this important role. His aim was simple: every person in India should have a unique identity that can be verified digitally anywhere in the country.

What is Aadhaar and How does it Work?

Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number based on biometric and demographic data. It includes fingerprints, iris scans, and basic personal details.

This system made it possible for people to prove their identity easily without carrying many documents. It also became a part of India’s digital system, often called “Indian Stack.”

Benefits of Aadhaar

Aadhaar has brought many positive changes in India.

  • First, it helped the government send money directly to people’s bank accounts. This reduced corruption and removed middlemen.
  • Second, it supported schemes like Jan Dhan Yojana by making it easier to open bank accounts for millions of people.
  • Third, Aadhaar made processes like KYC (Know Your Customer) simple. Now, opening a bank account or getting a SIM card takes much less time.

Overall, Aadhaar made many services faster, easier, and more transparent.

What is Nandan Nilekani Doing Now?

Today, Nandan Nilekani is working on a new project called ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce).

This project aims to support small shopkeepers and reduce the dominance of big e-commerce companies. It helps small businesses go digital and reach more customers.
