The census is an important process through which a country collects information about its population. It helps the government understand how many people live in different areas and what their needs are. In India, the census has a long history that started in the 19th century. Over time, it has developed from simple counting methods to a large and well-organized national activity.
Henry Walter is known as the “Father of Census in India.” He was a British officer who carried out the first proper and organized population survey in Dacca (now Dhaka) in 1830. His work was special because he did not just count people but also collected detailed information about them. This method his method more scientific and useful.
Henry Walter introduced a new way of collecting population data. He divided people into groups based on age, gender and occupation. He even studied house conditions and social categories. His detailed method changed the way population data was recorded. Instead of rough guesses, his work focused on accurate numbers and proper classification.
Although Henry Walter started the idea, the first complete census of India was conducted in 1881. This was done under Lord Ripon, with W.C. Plowden as the Census Commissioner. This census was important because it counted people across the country at the same time. It also started the tradition of conducting a census every 10 years.
The journey of the Indian census has passed through many important stages. In 1872, the first attempt to count the population of the whole country was made, but it was not done at the same time everywhere. In 1881, the first proper and simultaneous census was completed. After independence, the first census of India was held in 1951. The most recent completed census was in 2011 and the next one in 2027 is planned to be digital.
The census plays a very important role in the development of the country. It helps the government decide where to build schools, hospitals and roads. It also helps in dividing areas for elections and ensuring fair representations. By studying census data, the government can support weaker sections of society. Businesses also use this data to understand people’s needs and plan their services.
India is now preparing for the Census 2027, which will be the first digital census in the country. People may also get the option to fill in their details online. This will make the process faster, more accurate and easier for both the government and citizens.
