Why the Name “Mozart of Madras”?

In 2009, Time magazine included A.R. Rahman in tis list of the world’s most influential people. The magazine called him the “Mozart of Madras.”

This nickname compares compares Rahman with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, one of the greatest musicians in history. Like Mozart, Rahman is known for his creativity, versatility, and deep understanding of music.

Early Life of A.R. Rahman

A.R. Rahman was born on 6 January 1967 in Chennai (earlier called Madras). His original name was Dileep Kumar. His father, R.K. Shekhar, was a music composer, which helped Rahman learn music from a very young age.

However, life was not easy for him. His father passed away when Rahman was just nine years old. To support his family, he started working early and even faced difficulties in his studies. But his love for music never faded.

Journey into Music

Rahman began playing musical instruments at a very young age. By the age of 11, he was already working with orchestras. Later, he studied Western classical music at Trinity College in London.

Before entering films, he composed music for advertisements (jingles). His big break came in 1992 when director Mani Ratnam gave him a chance to compose music for the film Roja. The music became a huge success, and Rahman won a National Award.

A.R. Rahman has won many prestigious awards in his career. Some of his biggest achievements include:

  • Two Academy Awards (Oscars) for the film Slumdog Millionaire
  • Two Grammy Awards
  • A BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe Award
