The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced Vishnu Deo Sai as the next Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, succeeding Ajit Jogi. Let’s delve into the details and background of this prominent political figure.
Vishnu Deo Sai secures a historic position as Chhattisgarh’s first tribal Chief Minister, following the exclusion of Ajit Jogi’s Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
Hailing from a politically influential family, Vishnu Deo Sai commenced his political journey as a village sarpanch. His grandfather, Budhnath Sai, served as a nominated MLA from 1947 to 1952. His elder brother, Narhari Prasad Sai, was a two-term MLA, an MP, and a minister of state in the Janata Party government.
Starting as a village sarpanch, Vishnu Deo Sai climbed the political ladder to become the Union Minister of State for Steel in Prime Minister Modi’s first cabinet.
Encouraged by BJP’s Dilip Singh Judev, Sai entered electoral politics in 1990, winning as an MLA from Tapkara. Despite a defeat in 1998 from Pathalgaon, he rebounded in the recent 2023 Chhattisgarh assembly elections, securing the Kunkuri constituency.
Vishnu Deo Sai has a robust parliamentary history, winning four consecutive Lok Sabha elections from Raigarh constituency between 1999 and 2014.
Born in Jashpur, Vishnu Deo Sai, belonging to the Kanwar tribe, pursued education in a government school in Kunkuri. He began his academic journey in Ambikapur but chose to return to his village in 1988 before completing his graduation.
Despite being denied a ticket in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Vishnu Deo Sai made a triumphant return in the 2023 Chhattisgarh assembly polls, securing victory in the Kunkuri constituency.
Before entering politics, Sai worked as an agriculturist, reflecting a connection to the grassroots and the challenges faced by rural communities. Vishnu Deo Sai’s ascendancy to the Chief Minister’s office marks a significant chapter in Chhattisgarh’s political landscape, with his rich political heritage and diverse experience poised to shape the state’s future trajectory.
