WMO Warns Earth's Climate Is "Flashing Red" in 2026
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a serious warning in 2026. The warning stating that the Earth’s climate system is ‘flashing red’ due to accelerating global warming effect. According to the its latest report the planet’s energy imbalance has reached a 65-year high, It means that more heat is being trapped than released. The growing imbalance is driving the extreme weather, rising sea levels and environmental damage to the earth. This findings highlight an urgent call to address global challenge that is already affecting ecosystems, economies and human lives.
The Earth’s energy imbalance refers to the difference between energy received from the Sun and the energy which was sent back into space. Ideally this should be in balance and remain stable.
Due to rising greenhouse gases and less heat is escaping into space. As a result of this excess energy is storing in the Earth’s system and it also leading to continuous warming and climate instability.
This imbalance has now reached its highest level in the last 65 years making it a key indicator of climate change.
One of the most alarming findings is that the oceans are absorbing over 90% of excess heat which are generated by global warming.
This has serious long term consequences and will impact on the earth temperature.
Ocean temperatures have been rising day by day and within the last nine years it has reached the highest levels ever.
The rate of ocean warming between 2005 and 2025 is more than double compared to earlier decades.
Oceans: 91% of excess heat
Land: 5%
Ice melt: 3%
Atmosphere: 1%
Even if emissions will reduce oceans will continue warming due to stored heat.
The report also highlights that greenhouse gas concentrations are too at historic highs and this will drive the climate crisis further at high level.
These gases trap heat in the atmosphere and worsening global warming and increasing extreme climate events.
Global warming is also rapidly melting glaciers and polar ice sheets and especially in Greenland and Antarctica. This reason for contributing to rising sea levels worldwide.
By 2025 the global sea levels had risen about 11 cm compared to 1993 levels. The rate of rise has also increased significantly.
Sea Level Rise Trend Are
This trends are posing risks like coastal flooding, loss of land and damage to infrastructure.
The oceans are not only warming but also they are becoming more acidic due to absorbing carbon dioxide.
Between the year 2015 and 2024 oceans have absorbed about 29% of human CO₂ emissions.
This situation has lowered ocean pH levels to the lowest in 26,000 years and it affecting marine ecosystems and fisheries.
Regions like the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean are witnessing the significant changes and it also threatening food security and biodiversity.
The past decade has been seen as the warmest period ever recorded and year 2025 among the hottest years despite cooling effects like La Niña.
This rise is leading to more heatwaves, floods, droughts and storms and this have impacted millions around the world.
Climate change is not just an environmental issue but it is affecting human health and livelihoods.
Around the 1.2 billion workers are exposed to extreme heat every year.
This have reduces the productivity and increases health risks and specially in sectors like agriculture and construction.
