World Down Syndrome Day: 21 March

What is the History of World Down Syndrome Day:

Following its establishment by Down Syndrome International (DSI) during their 2005 World Congress, World Down Syndrome Day was first commemorated in 2006 through a global campaign spearheaded by the Brazilian Federation of Associations of Down Syndrome in collaboration with DSI and its members.

In November 2011, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution designating March 21 as World Down Syndrome Day to be recognized annually, beginning in 2012. The UNGA declared that this day should be observed each year to raise awareness and understanding about Down syndrome.

What Is Down Syndrome?

Down syndrome is a genetic condition that causes mild to serious physical and developmental problems.

People with Down syndrome are born with an extra chromosome. Chromosomes are bundles of genes, and your body relies on having just the right number of them. With Down syndrome, this extra chromosome leads to a range of issues that affect you both mentally and physically.
