World Down Syndrome Day: 21 March

March 21 is observed as World Down Syndrome Day worldwide, aiming to increase public awareness and show support for individuals living with this genetic condition. The United Nations chose this date to highlight the link between Down syndrome and the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, which makes it unique. The day serves as an opportunity to educate and raise awareness about Down syndrome.

What is the Theme of World Down Syndrome Day 2023:

This year’s World Down Syndrome Day theme is ‘With Us, Not For Us’, emphasizing that people with disabilities should be treated equally and have access to the same opportunities as others. The theme conveys the message that individuals with Down syndrome have the right to be treated fairly and included in society, rather than just being assisted by others.

What is the Significance of World Down Syndrome Day 2023:

World Down Syndrome Day plays a crucial role in promoting awareness and acceptance of individuals with Down syndrome, while also recognizing their accomplishments and contributions.

It serves as a reminder that those with Down syndrome often face exclusion and discrimination, and that they are entitled to the same rights and opportunities as anyone else.

The day highlights the importance of treating individuals with Down syndrome with respect and dignity, and promoting their inclusion in society.

What is the History of World Down Syndrome Day:

Following its establishment by Down Syndrome International (DSI) during their 2005 World Congress, World Down Syndrome Day was first commemorated in 2006 through a global campaign spearheaded by the Brazilian Federation of Associations of Down Syndrome in collaboration with DSI and its members.

In November 2011, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution designating March 21 as World Down Syndrome Day to be recognized annually, beginning in 2012. The UNGA declared that this day should be observed each year to raise awareness and understanding about Down syndrome.

What Is Down Syndrome?

Down syndrome is a genetic condition that causes mild to serious physical and developmental problems.

People with Down syndrome are born with an extra chromosome. Chromosomes are bundles of genes, and your body relies on having just the right number of them. With Down syndrome, this extra chromosome leads to a range of issues that affect you both mentally and physically.
