World Fair Play Day Celebrating the Power of Sports to Unite and Inspire

Starting in 2025, the United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed May 19 as World Fair Play Day, marking a global recognition of sport’s role in promoting peace, inclusion, and justice. Backed by several member states, this new observance emphasizes the transformative power of sports beyond just competition — as a tool for unity, discipline, and respect.

Why a World Fair Play Day?

The establishment of World Fair Play Day stems from the deep understanding that sports and physical activity are far more than recreational pursuits. They serve as bridges between communities, fostering discipline, perseverance, and mutual respect across cultures and ideologies. Sport helps dismantle barriers of race, religion, and nationality by highlighting common human values.

A remarkable historical example that underlines this idea is South Africa in 1995. Following the abolition of apartheid, President Nelson Mandela used the Rugby World Cup as a platform for national reconciliation. His symbolic support of the Springboks, once seen as a team representing the white minority, helped unify a deeply divided nation and rebuild the social fabric.

UN Resolution and Global Recognition

World Fair Play Day was adopted through UN General Assembly Resolution A/78/L.85 in 2024, an Olympic year — a symbolic nod to the values of international cooperation and sportsmanship. The resolution reaffirms that fair play in sports promotes,

  • Cooperation and inclusion
  • Respect and equality
  • Non-discrimination and anti-violence
  • Anti-doping values
  • The resolution also acknowledges the essential role played by the International Committee for Fair Play, which advocates for ethical conduct at all levels of sports — from grassroots games to elite competitions.

Values at the Core: Fair Play for Development

At its core, World Fair Play Day promotes a vision for a better world by rooting global actions in values like,

  • Honesty
  • Respect
  • Equal opportunity
  • Rule of law in sports

The UN links fair play directly to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aiming to,

  • Eradicate hunger
  • Reduce poverty
  • Promote gender equality
  • Support peace and justice
  • By embracing these principles, sports become a vehicle for development and reconciliation, contributing to stronger, more equitable societies.
