World Habitat Day 2026: Theme, History, Significance and Global Housing Crisis
World Habitat Day is celebrated every year on the first Monday in the month of October as a way of bringing to light the state of the human settlements and the crucial need for adequate housing. For the year 2026, it will be celebrated on October 5. The United Nations has decided on “Adequate Housing for All” as the theme for this year’s celebration.
The United Nations General Assembly declared World Habitat Day in 1985, and its first observance took place in 1986.
It urges governments, organisations, and communities to reflect on human settlements planning and development.

The concept of adequate housing does not only include a physical shelter over one’s head. In terms of international human rights, adequate housing is associated with issues like security of tenure, affordability, basic services, habitability, accessibility and location.

Protracted housing insecurity may be caused by conflicts and humanitarian crises since refugees and IDPs face this problem.
Therefore, the theme of the International Year of 2026 will include problems that relate to housing together with other issues, including poverty, climate change adaptation, urbanization and others.
