World Heart Day 2026: Theme, History, Risk Factors and Prevention
World Heart Day is marked every year on 29 September for raising awareness concerning CVDs, their risk factors and preventive measures against them. For 2026, the theme will be “Don’t Miss a Beat”, emphasizing the significance of spotting warning signs and being mindful about heart health. The campaign stresses the need for people to concentrate on preventing CVD, detecting it in its early stages and leading a healthy life. The WHO has continuously identified tobacco usage, poor diets, physical inactivity, hypertension and other risk factors as significant contributors to cardiovascular diseases.
World Heart Day has evolved into a global campaign aimed at increasing awareness about cardiovascular diseases and is coordinated by the WHF with WHO’s assistance. It is marked annually on 29 September and has now become an international forum for promoting awareness about CVDs.
Through various campaigns on World Heart Day, WHO has highlighted many issues like physical inactivity, tobacco usage, unhealthy diets, excessive salt intake and cardiovascular health among diverse populations.
Observing World Heart Day also helps to complement other public health initiatives to reduce mortality due to NCDs and increase CVD prevention and management.
There may be a combination of behavioral, metabolic, and other risk factors that lead to the occurrence of cardiovascular disease. Some of these risk factors may be modifiable by adopting healthy behaviors and treatment.

Cardiovascular disease is one of the most important public health problems of the WHO South-East Asia Region. WHO found that hypertension, diabetes, tobacco smoking, poor diet, alcohol consumption and physical inactivity were the major risk factors.
