World Population Day 2026: Theme, History, Significance, Objectives
Every year, July 11 is celebrated as World Population Day, the day observes to raising awareness regarding important population-related issues and challenges. This day was set up by the UNDP in the year 1989 and emphasizes the importance of reproductive health, family planning, gender equality, and the importance of making informed decisions. As the world attempts to deal with the demographic changes, World Population Day of 2026 looking at the empowerment of the youth of the world and it highlights the importance of sustainable development, inclusive growth, and sustainable management of resources.

It calls for the governments, communities and organizations to empower youths and help them to make the right decisions regarding their education, profession and families in the process of contributing to sustainable development as well.
The introduction of World Population Day can be traced back to the event termed as “Five Billion Day” celebrated on July 11, 1987 when five billion estimation of the global population was made that day.
This day is marked every year since it was announced by UNDP in 1989. The main aim of observing the day is to make the world aware of the developments regarding population growth.
Over the years, the global population has continued to rise 5 billion in 1987, 7 billion in 2011 and 8 billion in 2022 which has eventually turned this day into a grand celebration for shaping the world in the direction of the sustainable population as well as equitable development.
