World's First Vedic Clock Unveiled in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh
Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, is set to unveil a groundbreaking innovation in timekeeping with the world’s first Vedic Clock. This meticulously crafted timepiece, housed on an 85-foot tower at the city’s Jantar Mantar, will be officially inaugurated on March 1st, 2024, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a virtual ceremony.
Located near the Government Jiwaji Observatory, the Vedic clock transcends the conventional role of displaying time. It is designed to offer comprehensive information relevant to the Vedic Hindu Panchang, including:
This unique approach provides a window into ancient Indian timekeeping methods and their connection to various cultural and astrological aspects. The clock will also display both Indian Standard Time (IST) and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) for reference.
Shishir Gupta, a member of the development team, explains the distinctive features: “The clock will divide the time between sunrises into 30 parts, with each hour consisting of 48 minutes according to IST. The reading will start from 0:00 with sunrise, marking the beginning of each 30-hour cycle.”
Ujjain, with its historical significance as a center for timekeeping, is a fitting location for this remarkable invention. The city’s association with precise timekeeping dates back centuries, with the Tropic of Cancer passing through its geographical location. Notably, Ujjain also housed a time calculation machine 300 years ago, further solidifying its historical role in this field.
The initiative for the Vedic clock began on November 6th, 2022, with the then Higher Education Minister, Mohan Yadav (now Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh), laying the foundation stone. This project not only showcases India’s rich cultural heritage but also demonstrates its continued pursuit of scientific advancements.
The Vedic clock’s inauguration on March 1st serves as a reminder of India’s unique contributions to the world and its ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between tradition and innovation.
