• Anna Modayil Mani, a.k.a. Anna Mani was born in 1918 to a family of Syrian Christians in Peermade, Kerala.
• Anna Mani’s father was a civil engineer. Anna Mani was an avid reader and the seventh of her family’s eight children.
• Anna Mani started wearing just khadi clothing after being inspired by Gandhi’s nationalist struggle and impressed by him during the Vaikom Satyagraha.
• The Mani family was a typical upper-class professional household where the daughters were educated for marriage and the sons were prepared for high-level services.
• But Anna Mani would have none of it. She spent her formative years immersed in books, and by the time she was eight years old, she had read nearly every book in the Malayalam public library.
• By the time Anna Mani was twelve, she had finished reading every book written in English.
• Anna Mani‘s life was influenced and fashioned by the book world, which introduced her to new concepts and instilled in her a strong sense of social justice.

Anna Mani’s Education

• Anna Mani was keenly interested in the dance and wanted to pursue dance as a career, but she chose Physics since she found the subject to be interesting.
• Anna Mani obtained a B.Sc. with honours in physics and chemistry from the Pachaiyappa’s College in Chennai (then Madras) in 1939.
• Anna Mani was awarded a research fellowship to the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore in 1940.
• Anna Mani enrolled in graduate physics courses at Imperial College, London, in 1945 with the intention of specialising on meteorological equipment.
• Anna Mani studied the optical characteristics of diamond and ruby while working under Prof. C. V. Raman after graduating from Pachai College.
• She wrote five research papers, submitted a PhD dissertation, but was denied a degree because she lacked a physics master’s.

• Anna Mani joined the meteorology department in Pune after moving back to India in 1948, where she published a plethora of studies on meteorological instrumentation.
• Mani was in charge of organising the importation of British meteorological equipment.
• By 1953, Anna Mani had taken charge of a group of 121 men and was working on creating a tool for measuring ozone.
• A membership in the International Ozone Association was granted to Mani.
• At the Thumba rocket launch site, she erected an instrumentation tower and a meteorological observatory.

• Anna Mani was a member of numerous scientific associations, including the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Indian National Science Academy, the American Meteorological Society, the International Solar Energy Society, and the International Association for Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics. Mani was awarded the INSA K. R. Ramanathan Medal in 1987.
• As the Deputy Director General, Anna Mani was sent to Delhi in 1969. She worked in Egypt as a WMO consultant in 1975.
• In 1976, Anna Mani left her position as the Indian Meteorological Department’s deputy director general.
