11 Years of Digital India: A Tech Revolution Empowering the Poorest

As India marks 11 years of the Digital India initiative, the country reflects on a technological revolution that has redefined governance, transparency, and service delivery. Launched in 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Digital India aimed to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. Over the past decade, it has become the backbone of many public welfare schemes, ensuring that the benefits of development reach even the remotest corners of the country.

June 2025 marks the 11th anniversary of the Digital India mission. PM Modi highlighted its transformative impact, especially in empowering the poor and promoting transparency. The initiative is now deeply embedded in policy-making and public welfare delivery across sectors.

1. Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT): Speed & Transparency

  • 322+ schemes under 56 ministries integrated.
  • ₹44 lakh crore transferred directly to beneficiary accounts.
  • ₹3.48 lakh crore saved by eliminating leakages and middlemen.
  • 90x increase in DBT volumes over the past decade.

2. Aadhaar: World’s Largest Digital Identity

  • Over 140 crore citizens have a 12-digit Aadhaar number.
  • Aadhaar authentication transactions have crossed 150 billion.
  • Critical for DBT, digital signatures, banking KYC, and more.

3. DigiLocker: Making Governance Paperless

  • 52+ crore users.
  • 852+ crore documents issued.
  • Enables secure access to certificates (e.g., PAN, driving licenses, education).

4. Jeevan Pramaan: Easing Pensioner Lives

  • Digital Life Certificates eliminate the need for in-person bank visits.
  • Over 10 crore pensioners registered.
  • 143 lakh Digital Life Certificates submitted since Nov 2024.

5. UMANG App: One Nation, One Digital Gateway

  • Offers 2,000+ services across departments on a single app.
  • 8.21 crore users, 597+ crore transactions.

6. Rural Digital Empowerment

  • Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyaan (PMGDISHA):
  • Aims to make 6 crore rural Indians digitally literate.
  • Reduces the digital divide and boosts digital awareness at the grassroots.
