1971 Memorial in Bangladesh Honouring India Heroes

 

Introduction

In a significant event of remembrance and gratitude, a memorial dedicated to the Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971 is nearly completion in Ashuganj, Bangladesh. This monument serves as a symbol of solidarity and shared history between the two nations.

Remembering the Heroes

The memorial, which is expected to be completed by December, will carry the names of around 1,600 Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971. This marks the first time that Bangladesh is building a memorial exclusively to honor Indian soldiers who played a pivotal role in the nation’s quest for independence.

A Symbol of Bilateral Relations

The foundation stone for this poignant memorial was laid by Indian Prime Narendra Modi and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in March 2021. This historic event symbolizes the strong bonds between the two nations.

Minister’s Vision

Bangladeshi Minister for Liberation War Affairs, A.K.M. Mozammel Haque, expressed his hope that the monument would be completed by December. He emphasized that the engraving of the names of Indian soldiers on the memorial would serve as an evident to the sacrifice of Indian soldiers and their legacy.

A Dual Inauguration

Efforts are being made to have the memorial inaugurated by both Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and Sheikh Hasina. Given the upcoming elections in both countries, the target for the inauguration is set for March or April, allowing both leaders to pay tribute to the heroes of the 1971 Liberation War.

Strategic Location and Historic Significance

The site which is chosen for the memorial is Ashuganj, holds a strategic significance as it is situated close to the Indian border, bordering the state of Tripura. The location was chosen to reflect the close to reflect the close ties between Indian and Bangladesh and to allow easy access for visitors from visitors.

Ashuganj played a crucial role during the Liberation War, as Indian forces crossed the Meghna River on their way to Dhaka. This adds a deep historical resonance to the location of the memorial.

A Shared Vision

During his visit to Bangladesh in March 2021, Prime Minister Modi saluted the bravery of the Indian soldiers who fought alongside their Bangladesh counterparts. He also announced India’s intention to donate military equipment used by the Indian armed forces during the Liberation War for display in Bangladesh museums, further cementing the strong bond between the two nations.
