In a momentous ceremony at the Kumaon Regimental Centre (KRC) in Ranikhet, the 3rd Battalion of the Naga Regiment, also known as 3 Naga, was presented with the prestigious President’s Colour award. This significant recognition, symbolized by a flag, was bestowed upon the battalion by Army Chief Gen. Manoj Pande, marking a remarkable milestone in the unit’s illustrious history. Let’s delve into the significance of the President’s Colour award and the achievements of 3 Naga.

The presentation of the President’s Colour to the 3rd Battalion of the Naga Regiment is not just a ceremony; it signifies the highest level of recognition for the battalion’s achievements. This award acknowledges their unwavering commitment, dedication, and acts of valor. 3 Naga has consistently demonstrated excellence and has added yet another feather to its cap with this prestigious honor. It is a moment of pride not only for the battalion but also for the entire nation.

The President’s Colour: A Symbol of Military Excellence

A Rich Tradition: The President’s Colour, often referred to as ‘Nishan,’ is a cherished tradition in the military. It serves as a symbol of recognition for a battalion’s outstanding achievements and valor.

Collective Spirit: This ‘colour’ represents the collective spirit of a battalion, a testament to their acts of bravery and dedication, often forged in sweat and blood.

Historical Origins: The tradition of presenting ‘colours’ began during the colonial era. However, it took a new direction on November 23, 1950, when the ‘king’s colour’ of the British Indian regiments was laid to rest in the Chetwode Hall, Dehradun, making way for the ‘colours’ of the President of the Republic of India.

Presidential Presentation: The President’s Colour is presented by the President of India or, on their behalf, by the Chief of the Army Staff.

3 Naga: A Battalion of Distinction

Raising of 3 Naga: The 3rd Battalion of the Naga Regiment was established on October 1, 2009, in Haldwani, situated amidst the Kumaon Hills, the ancestral home of the Kumaon and Naga regiments.

Inception and Early Leadership: A significant moment in the battalion’s history occurred during its establishment when the regimental flag of the Naga regiment was handed over by Brig Bhupinder Singh, commandant of KRC, to Col (Now Brig) Udai Jawa, the first Commanding Officer entrusted with raising the battalion. The regimental flag was proudly hoisted for the first time at the Battalion Quarter Guard on October 1, 2009.

Remarkable Achievements: Since its inception, 3 Naga has consistently demonstrated excellence, receiving numerous accolades that include one Vishisht Seva Medal, 11 Chief of Army Staff (COAS) commendation cards, 12 Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS) commendation cards, 37 General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) commendation cards, and one Force Commander (UN Mission) commendation card.
