BRICS Culture Ministers’ Meeting

Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi, Minister of State for Culture and External Affairs, attended the 7th BRICS Culture Ministers’ Meeting via video conference, which was hosted by the People’s Republic of China and attended by all BRICS Member Nations. Under the subject Establishing a Cultural Partnership Featuring Inclusiveness and Mutual Learning among BRICS, a discussion was conducted to promote and expand cultural activities among the BRICS countries.

  • The debate focused on boosting cultural digitization growth and collaboration, enhancing cooperation on cultural heritage preservation, and pushing the development of BRICS nations’ cultural exchange platforms.
  • The Ministers approved the BRICS Action Plan 2022-2026, which aims to expand cultural cooperation and execute the 2015 BRICS Cultural Cooperation Agreement.
  • In her speech, the Minister articulated India’s viewpoint and highlighted the following points:
  1. India, with its diverse cultural expression, ensures that the BRICS countries have a platform to familiarise themselves with cultural values through exchange programs/activities in the fields of music, theatre, puppetry, various tribal art forms, and dance forms, particularly classical and folk dance.
  2. The critical significance of digital technology in overcoming the problems provided by the Covid-19 epidemic, which restricted physical movements over the last two and a half years, as well as the relevance of virtual channels in resuming life on all fronts, including culture.
  3. Digitizing important collections in the realm of cultural heritage and displaying them in open information space is one of India’s top goals since it allows for long-term storage and greater access to cultural content held in cultural institutions such as museums and libraries. The rich cultural history of the BRICS countries may be studied through virtual exhibitions.
  4. India is a firm believer in cultural diversity and intercultural interaction. It is a major proponent of a sustainable and resilient environment that incorporates historical and traditional knowledge into creative and culture-based environmental solutions.
  5. Indian art is a blend of the country’s rich heritage and recent history. It has unquestionably established India as a dynamic and creative force in the world.
  6. Working toward inclusive and culturally sensitive development paradigms is critical in view of today’s environmental, social, and economic issues. A plan that integrates cultural heritage, cultural and creative industries, and an awareness of people’s intrinsic creativity and collective intelligence is urgently required.
  • She expressed her gratitude to the Chair and expressed her intention for growing and comprehensive BRICS collaboration in all areas.
  • The Ministers of Culture of all BRICS Nations agreed and signed the Action Plan for the Implementation of the Agreement between the Governments of the BRICS States on Cooperation in the Field of Culture (2022-2026) at the end of the conference.
