A Multi-Domain Exercise Vayu Prahar held at LAC

Exercise Vayu Prahar

Recently, during the on-going tensions between India and China at the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the Indian Army and Air Force carried out a 96-hour joint exercise named ‘Vayu Prahar’ in the eastern region. The exercise aimed to develop plans to achieve synergy in multi-domain operations by using air and land forces. It was conducted in the second week of March, and its primary objective was to enhance coordination between the Army and Air Force for effective operations in a multi-domain battlefield.

Objective of the Vayu Prahar exercise

The primary objective of the Vayu Prahar exercise was to facilitate coordination and practice among different agencies for swift mobilization, transportation, and deployment of forces within a specific area, which can be implemented across different areas. The scope of the joint exercise included the rapid mobilization of a rapid reaction force from the hinterland, which was then responsible for air-land operations in a designated advance landing ground (ALG). The exercise aimed to enhance the ability of the Army and Air Force to work together seamlessly, as well as to rehearse and refine their tactics and techniques for executing joint operations in a multi-domain environment. Overall, the exercise was designed to enhance the readiness and preparedness of the Indian military to respond to any potential threats and challenges in the region.

Location of the Exercise

While the precise location of the Vayu Prahar exercise and the designated ALG is unknown, it is known that there are approximately seven to eight ALGs located in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. This state lies in the eastern sector of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China. In December 2022, there was a clash between over 200 soldiers of China’s People’s Liberation Army and Indian soldiers in the Yangtse area of Arunachal’s Tawang district. This conflict occurred amidst increasing reports of Chinese incursions and construction activities near the eastern sector over the past few years. The Vayu Prahar exercise, therefore, highlights India’s efforts to enhance its readiness and preparedness to respond to any potential threats and challenges in the region, including those posed by China.
