Ahmedabad Recommended to Host CWG Games By Executive Board

In a major step toward bringing the Commonwealth Games back to India after two decades, the Commonwealth Sport Executive Board has officially recommended Ahmedabad as the proposed host for the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG). The final decision will be made on November 26, 2025, during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow.

Background: India’s Bid and CWG History

  • India last hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010, in New Delhi. With this latest development, India is positioned to welcome back the prestigious international sporting event during its Centenary edition in 2030.
  • Ahmedabad, also known locally as Amdavad, emerged as the preferred host city over Abuja, Nigeria, which had also submitted a competitive bid.
  • While Nigeria’s proposal impressed the board, a strategy will be developed to support Africa’s bid for the 2034 Games, fulfilling a long-term vision to host the event on the African continent.

Strategic Significance of Ahmedabad’s Nomination

Hosting the 2030 CWG would hold multifaceted importance for India,

  • Sports Diplomacy: It would mark India’s second time hosting the CWG and first time outside New Delhi, showcasing its capacity to hold mega-events across diverse regions.
  • Boost to Olympic Aspirations: This bid strengthens India’s ongoing campaign to host the 2036 Olympic Games, which is also proposed for Ahmedabad.
  • National Development Goals: CWG 2030 aligns with India’s larger vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, leveraging sports for youth empowerment, infrastructure development, and global engagement.
  • Centenary Celebration of the Games: The 2030 Games will mark the 100-year anniversary of the Commonwealth Games, adding historical importance to India’s potential role as host.

Statements from Key Stakeholders

Dr. P T Usha, President of Commonwealth Games Association India, welcomed the recommendation and said,

  • “Hosting the Centenary Commonwealth Games in Amdavad would not only showcase India’s world-class sporting and event capabilities, but also play a meaningful role in our national journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047.”

Dr. Donald Rukare, Interim President of Commonwealth Sport, emphasized,

  • “The Executive Board has carefully considered the Evaluation Committee’s findings and is recommending Amdavad to our membership… a significant milestone for the Movement.”

Nigeria’s Bid and Future Outlook

  • Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, submitted an “impressive and ambitious” proposal.
  • Though not selected for 2030, the Executive Board has promised to support Nigeria’s potential bid for 2034, reinforcing the commitment to diversify CWG hosts across continents.
  • This reflects a dual priority: acknowledging India’s current readiness while fostering global inclusivity in future editions.

What’s Next?

  • November 26, 2025: The final vote by the full Commonwealth Sport membership will be conducted in Glasgow
  • If approved, Ahmedabad will become the second Indian city to host the CWG
  • Preparations will then begin to ready the city for the 2030 Centenary Games, likely bringing major infrastructure, economic, and cultural benefits
