Ajay Kumar Bhalla Appointed Nagaland Governor with Additional Charge After Demise of La Ganesan

In a key constitutional development, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the current Governor of Manipur, has been appointed to take additional charge as the Governor of Nagaland. This move follows the demise of Nagaland Governor La Ganesan on August 15, 2025. The announcement was made through an official communiqué from the President of India on August 16, 2025.

Background: Sudden Vacancy in Nagaland Raj Bhavan

The appointment comes in the wake of the death of La Ganesan, who was serving as the Governor of Nagaland since February 2023. The 80-year-old leader passed away while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chennai. His demise created a constitutional vacancy, necessitating immediate action for continuity of governance.

The Raj Bhavan in Kohima confirmed his death, which prompted the President’s Office to issue an urgent notification.

Appointment of Ajay Kumar Bhalla

According to the official note from the Rashtrapati Bhavan,

“Consequent upon the demise of Shri La Ganesan, Governor of Nagaland, the President of India has appointed Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Governor of Manipur, to discharge the functions of the Governor of Nagaland, in addition to his own duties.”

This type of additional charge appointment is a common constitutional practice in India, especially in situations involving sudden vacancies. It ensures that the functions of the gubernatorial office continue uninterrupted until a full-time successor is named.

Who is Ajay Kumar Bhalla?

Ajay Kumar Bhalla is a seasoned civil servant and administrator, currently serving as Governor of Manipur since 2024. A retired IAS officer, Bhalla has held several senior roles in the Ministry of Home Affairs, including as the Union Home Secretary. Known for his administrative acumen, his temporary appointment to Nagaland is seen as a move to maintain political and administrative stability in the region.

Why This Matters

This development is significant for several reasons,

  • Continuity in Governance: Ensures constitutional duties in Nagaland are performed without interruption.
  • North-East Focus: Reflects the Centre’s continued emphasis on stability in the North-East region.
  • Exam Importance: Key fact for current affairs, polity, and governance sections of civil service and other competitive exams.
