Ajinkya Naik, at 37 years old, has been elected as the youngest president in the history of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). In a decisive victory, Naik defeated Sanjay Naik, a candidate supported by Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar, by 107 votes in a one-sided election.
Ajinkya Naik secured 221 votes, while Sanjay Naik received 114 votes. The election was held following the passing of the former MCA President Amol Kale. Naik, who was previously the MCA Secretary, cited his extensive experience and committee involvement as factors contributing to his victory.
Although Naik ran for the position without explicit political backing, he acknowledged the behind-the-scenes support from influential figures, including Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former MCA, BCCI, and ICC President Sharad Pawar. There were also claims of tacit support from Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Naik’s priorities include improving cricket infrastructure in Mumbai and creating more job opportunities for cricketers by engaging with corporate entities. His victory is seen as a significant step for the local cricket community, with Naik promising to address issues such as job scarcity for players.
