Algerian President Tebboune Wins Second Term with 95% Vote

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has been re-elected for a second term with 95% of the vote, according to the country’s electoral authority, ANIE. The official results indicate that Tebboune received 94.65% of the vote, while his opponents, Abdelaali Hassani Cherif and Youcef Aouchiche, garnered 3% and 2% respectively. Voter turnout was reported at 48%, with more than 24 million Algerians registered to vote.

Allegations of Irregularities

Despite Tebboune’s overwhelming victory, his re-election was marred by allegations of electoral irregularities. Rivals accused polling station officials of being pressured to inflate results and reported instances of proxy group voting. All three campaigns, including Tebboune’s, issued a joint statement expressing concerns about “vagueness and contradictions” in the reported participation figures.

Tebboune’s Focus and Challenges

Tebboune, who was heavily favored to win, had aimed to boost voter participation after a record abstention rate in the 2019 elections. His campaign had focused on promises to improve living standards, especially for young people. However, the low turnout and allegations of electoral issues have raised questions about the legitimacy of his win and his ability to address political and media freedom deficits.

International Reaction and Future Outlook

French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated Tebboune, emphasizing the importance of dialogue between the two nations. Analysts suggest that Tebboune’s victory could signal a warning, as his inability to engage younger voters and address ongoing political repression might weaken his presidency. Despite promises of job creation and economic improvements, Algeria remains heavily dependent on oil and gas revenues, with continuing concerns about human rights abuses and political dissent.
