Ali Larijani was a prominent Iranian political leader, thinker, and former military officer who played an important role in Iran’s governance for several decades. Known for his strong influence in national security and politics, he served in several high-ranking positions. Ali Larijani was born on 3 June 1958 in Najaf, Iraq, into a well-known religious Iranian family. His family originally belonged to Amol in Mazandaran province, Iran.
His father, Hashim Larijani, was a respected Shia religious scholar. Due to political pressure during the rule of Reza Shah, his family had to move between cities before finally settling back in Iran.
Larijani was highly educated and had a deep interest in philosophy. He studied at the University of Tehran, where he earned advanced degrees in Western philosophy.
Initially, he wanted to study computer science, but later shifted to philosophy after guidance from Morteza Motahhari.
He also taught at the university and wrote books on famous philosophers like Immanuel Kant, Saul Kripke, and David Lewis.
In 1981, Larijani joined the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and served during the Iran–Iraq War.
He later moved into government roles, serving as deputy minister in different departments. His administrative skills helped him rise quickly within Iran’s political system.
Larijani gained national recognition when he became head of Iran’s state broadcasting organization in 1994. He served in this role for about 10 years.
In 2005, he was appointed Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, where he handled sensitive issues like Iran’s nuclear program.
He worked closely with Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, and became one of his key representatives.
From 2008 to 2020, Larijani served as Speaker of Iran’s Parliament. During this time, he played a major role in shaping laws and policies.
He was considered a pragmatic conservative leader who sometimes supported moderate reforms while still maintaining traditional values.
Larijani was known for his balanced approach in politics. He supported practical decision-making and was influenced by economic ideas similar to Deng Xiaoping.
Although he belonged to the conservative camp, he often showed flexibility and was seen as a moderate figure over time.
After 2020, he became a member of the Expediency Discernment Council, an important advisory body in Iran.
In 2025, he was again appointed Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. During this period, he became extremely powerful and was considered by many as the de facto leader of Iran, especially during political unrest.
On 17 March 2026, Ali Larijani was killed in an airstrike during tensions between Iran and Israel. The attack was reportedly carried out by Israel.
His death marked a major turning point in Iran’s political landscape, as he was considered one of the most powerful figures in the country at the time.
Larijani came from a highly influential family. His brothers also held important positions in Iran’s government and judiciary.
He was married and had children. His daughter studied medicine in the United States, which also brought public attention during political tensions.
