Amaravati Set to Become The Andhra Pradesh Sole Capital: Explained

The Coastal State of India Andhra Pradesh is set for the major administrative transformation as the state government planning to officially to declare Amaravati as the sole capital of the State. This move come after the years of the political debate and policy changes which regarding the state’s capital structure. The new bill is expected to amend the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014 and will be giving Amaravati the full capital status.

Amaravati to Be Declared Sole Capital of Andhra Pradesh

The Central Government will be set to amend the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act of 2014 to officially declare the Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh.

The amendment will,

• Will replace the earlier provision under Section 5
• Clearly state the Amaravati shall be the new capital
• And come into effect retrospective from the June 2, 2024

From Shared Capital to Single Capital System

In 2014 after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh Hyderabad served as the common capital for both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. And this arrangement was meant to last for up to the 10 years.

As per the law Hyderabad would be eventually to become the exclusive capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have to establish its own capital. With this move it fulfill the long-pending requirement.

Amaravati Development: Vision and Progress

The idea of City of Amaravati as the capital was first strongly pushed by N. Chandrababu Naidu during his earlier tenure as Chief Minister of State in (2014-2019).

Various developments include the planning of the modern greenfield capital city. Also to investment in infrastructure and administrative buildings. And the single strategic location along the Krishna River banks.

The government has already started to significant changes in the administrative and infrastructure measures to establish the Amaravati as fully functional capital.

Political Shift: From Three Capitals to One

The capital issue of the state has been seen as the major political changes over the years.

Under the Previous Model (Three Capitals Plan) and This plan was Introduced by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy who was the then Chief Minister form (2019-2024).

• Visakhapatnam – Executive (Administrative) capital
• Amaravati – Legislative capital
• Kurnool – Judicial capital

This type of decentralized model was aimed at to balanced regional development but also faced criticism and legal challenges.
