Andhra Pradesh Bags India’s Largest ₹8,175 Crore Lithium Battery Gigafactory

In a major clean-energy boost, Andhra Pradesh has secured India’s largest integrated lithium-ion battery Gigafactory by Waaree Energies with an investment of ₹8,175 crore. The project will be set up at Rambilli in Anakapalli district and is expected to create around 3,000 direct jobs. With a 16 GWh production capacity, the facility will strengthen India’s battery manufacturing ecosystem and reduce dependence on imports in the strategic energy storage sector.

Waaree Energies to Build 16 GWh Lithium-Ion Gigafactory

Waaree Energies will establish a greenfield Gigafactory with,

  • 16 GWh battery production capacity
  • End-to-end battery value chain integration
  • Cell manufacturing and battery pack assembly
  • Large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) production

The project has received in-principle approval from the Andhra Pradesh State Investment Promotion Board.

Location Advantage: Rambilli in Anakapalli District

  • The Gigafactory will come up at Rambilli in Anakapalli district, Andhra Pradesh.
  • The state government views this project as a milestone under its Integrated Clean Energy Policy.
  • N Chandrababu Naidu chaired the investment board meeting that approved the project.
  • Nara Lokesh welcomed the investment, stating it will reduce import dependence and boost domestic battery manufacturing.

Why This Battery Gigafactory Matters for India

Large-scale lithium-ion battery manufacturing is critical for,

  • Renewable energy storage
  • Electric vehicle (EV) expansion
  • Grid stability and energy security
  • Reducing dependence on imported battery cells

The 16 GWh Waaree Gigafactory will significantly enhance India’s clean-energy manufacturing ecosystem and contribute to self-reliance under the broader Make in India and energy transition goals.

Andhra Pradesh’s Integrated Clean Energy Vision

Andhra Pradesh is positioning itself as a hub for clean-technology manufacturing. Under the state’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy, it has already attracted major investments in,

  • Renewable power generation
  • Solar manufacturing
  • Energy equipment production

The Waaree battery Gigafactory represents backward integration into advanced energy storage manufacturing, strengthening the entire clean-energy value chain.

Job Creation and Economic Impact

The project is expected to generate around 3,000 direct jobs, along with indirect employment opportunities in,

  • Manufacturing
  • Logistics and supply chain
  • Engineering and technical services

The investment strengthens Andhra Pradesh’s image as a preferred destination for next-generation energy industries.

What Is a Battery Gigafactory?

  • A Gigafactory is a large-scale manufacturing facility designed to produce battery cells and packs at massive capacity, typically measured in gigawatt-hours (GWh).
  • Such facilities are essential for scaling electric vehicles, renewable energy storage and grid modernization.
  • Countries investing in Gigafactories aim to secure supply chains and reduce reliance on imports.
