Andhra Pradesh to Build Space City, Defence Hubs

The Andhra Pradesh government has unveiled an ambitious plan to establish a space city in Tirupati and two major defence manufacturing hubs in Madakasira. The combined projects will attract investments worth ₹3,400 crore, positioning the state as a major hub for space technology and defence manufacturing in India.

Space City in Tirupati

The government has partnered with Skyroot Aerospace, a Hyderabad-based private space startup founded by former ISRO scientists, to build the space city.

Key features include,

  • Investment: ₹400 crore
  • Focus: Launch of private satellites and development of cost-effective small launch vehicles
  • Location Advantage: Tirupati, already home to ISRO’s Propulsion Complex, will serve as a natural choice to build integrated launch facilities.

The initiative is expected to make Andhra Pradesh a global player in private satellite launches, aligning with India’s growing role in the commercial space economy.

Defence Hubs in Madakasira

In parallel, the state will develop two defence manufacturing hubs in Madakasira, with a total investment of ₹3,000 crore.

These hubs will focus on,

  • Manufacturing aerospace components, defence electronics, and weapon systems
  • Generating thousands of jobs for local youth
  • Integrating with the national defence corridor projects to strengthen India’s self-reliance in military production
  • The hubs are also expected to attract partnerships with domestic MSMEs and global defence manufacturers.

Government’s Vision and Strategic Impact

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu emphasized that these projects reflect Andhra Pradesh’s ambition to,

  • Leverage science and technology for economic growth
  • Create world-class infrastructure for private space ventures
  • Strengthen India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliance) mission in defence and aerospace

The initiative is also expected to boost exports, bring foreign investment, and create a robust ecosystem of startups, research institutions, and manufacturing clusters.
