Former Railway Board Chief Anil Kumar Lahoti has been appointed as the chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) following the vacancy left by PD Vaghela. The appointment, approved by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), marks a significant transition in India’s telecommunications sector.
Lahoti, an Indian Railway Service of Engineer (IRSE) with a background in Civil Engineering and a Master of Engineering degree, brings extensive leadership experience and expertise in Strategic Management to his new role.
PD Vaghela vacated the position in November 2023, leading to Lahoti’s appointment. Lahoti’s tenure, initially for three years or until he turns 65, replaces Meenakshi Gupta, who held the position temporarily.
Lahoti’s appointment has garnered optimism within the industry, with expectations high for his leadership in advancing the goals of Digital India. Stakeholders, including the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), anticipate Lahoti’s guidance to drive growth and innovation in the telecommunications sector.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is an official body established by the Government of India under the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Act, 1997, regulating the telecommunications sector. It comprises a chairperson, up to two full-time members, and two part-time members. TRAI’s objective is to foster telecommunications growth in India, positioning the nation as a leader in the global information society.
