Arignar Anna Zoological Park Initiates Use of Plastic Bottles in a Unique Way

The increase in littering around the parks and zoos has made it difficult for the animals and the caretakers. The Arignar Anna Zoological Park is one such park that is worried about the increasing pollution near the park which is threatening the animals. The officials of the Arignar Anna Zoological Park have introduced a new method to keep a check on the littering of plastic bottles and pollution inside the park.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, the traditional cloth bags called “Manchappai,” which means ‘yellow bags,’ were distributed by the state environment minister Siva. V. Meyyanathan and health minister Ma. Subramanian in Chennai to promote the use of environmental-friendly carry bags instead of plastic bags which are harmful to the environment. Several youth groups participated in World Environment Day Rallies with the theme of ‘Only One Earth’.

  • The zoo has started charging ₹10 for each plastic water bottle from the visitors.
  • The visitors have to return the emptied bottle to the seller in the zoo and they’ll get refunds.
  • Till now, after the implementation of this initiative, the visitors and the authorities have both been happy with the results.
  • This initiative by the Arignar Anna Zoological Park has decreased the littering of plastic bottles inside the park.

  • Arignar Anna Zoological Park is also known as Vandalur Zoo which is located in Vandalur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

  • The park stretched around 1265 acres and has 2553 species of flora and fauna.
  • It has more than 1500 wild species which includes 46 endangered species.
  • It is the second wildlife sanctuary in Tamil Nadu after the Mudumalai national park.
  • The park aims to flourish the flora and fauna of the state.
