Armed Forces Veterans’ Day 2025- Honoring the Bravehearts

Every year, January 14 marks the observance of Armed Forces Veterans’ Day across India. This significant day is dedicated to paying tribute to the selfless duty and sacrifices of the armed forces veterans and fostering solidarity towards the families of the bravehearts who have served the nation. The day also emphasizes the connection between the veterans and the current serving personnel while addressing their welfare and concerns.

Origins of Veterans’ Day in India

The tradition of celebrating Armed Forces Veterans’ Day began on January 14, 2017, as a pan-India event initiated by the Ministry of Defence. The purpose was to recognize and honor the contributions of tri-services veterans (Army, Navy, and Air Force) and to ensure that their legacy is remembered and celebrated. This day also aimed to provide a platform to discuss issues related to pension, resettlement, and welfare of veterans and their families.

Why January 14?

The date holds historical significance as it commemorates the retirement of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa on January 14, 1953, after his illustrious service to the nation. Field Marshal Cariappa was the first Indian to become the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, succeeding General Sir F.R.R. Bucher, the last British officer to hold the position. Following his retirement, Field Marshal Cariappa played an active role in public and social causes and was instrumental in the formation of the Directorate of Resettlement, now known as the Directorate General Resettlement (DGR). This body focuses on the training and resettlement of retired armed forces personnel.

Interestingly, January 15 is celebrated as Army Day, as it marks the day in 1949 when Field Marshal Cariappa took over the command of the Indian Army, symbolizing India’s military independence.

Global Traditions Honoring Veterans

The tradition of honoring veterans is prevalent across the world. In many countries, days are designated to commemorate the service and sacrifices of military veterans.

Veterans’ Day in the United States

In the United States, Veterans’ Day is observed on November 11. Known as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in some parts of the world, it marks the anniversary of the end of World War I. The date symbolizes the signing of the armistice on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. The day honours the service of military veterans and the memory of fallen soldiers.
