Assam Announces OBC Status for Trans Community and Reservations for Anganwadi Workers
In a landmark policy push aimed at promoting social inclusion and grassroots empowerment, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on June 23, 2025, announced that the transgender community in Assam will now be granted OBC (Other Backward Class) status. In a parallel move, he also declared 50% reservation in supervisor-level positions under the Women and Child Development Department (WCD) for Anganwadi workers, boosting their career progression within the government framework.
