The Union Cabinet recently gave its approval to declare Ayodhya Airport as an international airport, marking a significant development for the city. The airport will be named “Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhyadham,” reflecting the historical and cultural significance of the region.
According to the government’s press release, elevating Ayodhya Airport to international status is crucial for realizing the city’s economic potential. Furthermore, it acknowledges Ayodhya’s significance as a global pilgrimage site, with the international status expected to attract foreign pilgrims and tourists.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed the government’s commitment to connecting Ayodhya to the world through a tweet following the announcement. The decision aligns with the government’s vision to position Ayodhya as a key economic hub and a prominent pilgrimage destination.
On December 30, 2023, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the newly built Ayodhya Airport. During a public event, he emphasized the importance of Maharishi Valmiki’s Ramayana, stating that it is a path of knowledge connecting people to Shri Ram. This historical and cultural context underlines the significance of the airport’s name.
The airport’s development will occur in phases. In its initial phase, the airport will have the capacity to handle 10 lakh (1 million) passengers annually. After the second phase of development, Maharishi Valmiki International Airport is expected to cater to a staggering 60 lakh (6 million) commuters annually.
The terminal building of Ayodhya Airport boasts state-of-the-art infrastructure, covering an area of 6500 sq m. Reflecting the upcoming Shri Ram Mandir’s temple architecture, the building’s facade is designed to evoke the spiritual and cultural essence of Ayodhya. The interiors feature local art, paintings, and murals depicting the life of Bhagwan Shri Ram.
The terminal building incorporates various sustainability features, such as an insulated roofing system, LED lighting, rainwater harvesting, landscaping with fountains, a water treatment plant, a sewage treatment plant, and a solar power plant. These features have been implemented to achieve a GRIHA 5-star rating, showcasing the government’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
Prime Minister Modi is expected to attend the consecration ceremony of the Ayodhya Ram Temple on January 22.
