Bayern Munich Legend Jerome Boateng Announces Retirement
Jerome Boateng, one of Germany’s most celebrated defenders and a former Bayern Munich stalwart, has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 37. The announcement was made via his Instagram account on 20 September 2025, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned nearly two decades. Boateng was part of Germany’s 2014 FIFA World Cup-winning team and formed a key part of Bayern Munich’s golden era, becoming synonymous with tactical discipline, defensive prowess, and precise long passing.
Boateng’s career began at Hertha BSC, followed by stints at Hamburger SV, Manchester City, and then Bayern Munich, where he spent the most significant phase of his career. At his peak, he was considered one of the world’s top centre-backs.
His ability to break opposition lines with long passes, coupled with his physical presence, made him a complete modern-day defender.
